Mylands
Shellac Polishes

Mylands are the UK’s largest supplier of restoration materials directly to the trade. Many of our formulations have remained virtually unchanged since the 1880’s and Gedge & Company in the City of London who were founded in 1841 originally created our wax polish formulations. We manufacture a comprehensive range of Shellac polishes suitable for all applications. For any technical information, please contact us. We only use the highest quality natural shellac in our products and the highest grade industrial alcohol as the carrying solvent.

Shellac Polishes
Although French Polish is the general term used for all types of shellac polish, it is also a Shellac Polish colour in its own right. There are many blends of shellac polish that have been developed over the years. The following products listed represent the bulk of those currently sold.

Shellac is such a versatile product from finishing antiques to using as a non-reactive barrier between two normally incompatible finishes. Used carefully it will produce stunning results. Consult our technical team when using with new finishing systems.

Application of Shellac (French) Polishes by brush or french polishers mop
Brush thin films evenly and try not to over brush the surface as shellacs dry relatively quickly and over brushing can cause a build up. In between each coat cut back with 0000 grade steel wool or 320 grade finishing paper (stearated finishing paper). For traditional French Polishing techniques see www.mylands.co.uk guide to French Polishing or our Padding and Polishing leaflet.Always use 0000 grade steel wool between coats, cutting the surface flat, evenly. With a little practice this process can achieve stunning results.

For valuable antique furniture always consult a restorer or conservator. Shellac (French) Polishes can also be applied with a high quality paint brush or preferably a Zorino or Squirrel mop but between coats apply the 0000 grade steel wool with a little more pressure to flatten the surface to remove any brush marks.

Abrade with steel wool and finish with Mylands Clear Wax to produce an amazing finish.

To thin or wash out brushes, use methylated spirits (de- natured pure grained alcohol – USA).
Drying Times: Touch dry 15 - 20 min, cutting back after 1 hour under normal room temperature. Allow 7 days to fully cure.

Heat resistant is best for table tops, however, always use placemats for dining. Shellac Polishes are compatible with most wood stains. If in doubt, consult your retailer for more information.

Try practicing on a wooden off-cut before your chosen project.
